Justin Schultz....PLAN B
By no means do the Edmonton Oilers have Justin Schultz locked up so it's only fair to look at what this team needs to do if/when they don't land the highlight coveted collegiate.
Steve Tambellini has said multiple times that he is looking to add one or two defenseman to help a blue line that has under achieved and fought injuries for the last couple of seasons.
Here are a few options that the Oilers may be looking at.
VIA TRADE:
MARK STREIT - New York Islanders - 4.1 Cap Hit - 1 year remaining, will be a UFA on July 1st 2013
I have heard, from a source outside of the organization, that the Oilers have apparently shown interest in Mark Streit. Both sides are being pretty quiet about this which could be a sign that there is something to it.
Streit will be a UFA at the end of next season and comes with a cap hit of 4.1 million. Being a big part of the Swiss Hockey program and playing in the Swiss league for a number of years he is clearly familiar with Ralph Krueger, or should I say Ralph Krueger would be familiar with him.
One of the things that could possibly hold this deal up is the cap floor for next season being set at just over 54 million dollars. The Islanders are currently about 10 million below the floor and moving four million dollars isn't going to help things.
They did just pick up Lubomir Visnovsky which means they wouldn't miss Streit on the power-play as much as they would have a week ago. Streit is also the Islanders captain, are they ready to hand the 'C' to John Tavares?

NIKLAS HJALMARSSON
The Chicago Blackhawks could be looking to free up a little salary and that would make Hjalmarsson expendable. By no means would this be a straight up salary dump though.
Hjalmarsson appears to have slipped behind Nick Leddy on the Hawks depth chart and with Chicago recently resigning Johnny Oduya one could argue he is now the #5 d-man on the Hawks. He is not overly physical and won't really contribute to the offense but he's not afraid to block shots and is pretty reliable in his own end. Like Streit he is a left handed shot. Is also just 25 years old.

MARC METHOT
I know there appears to be a few people in this city that get somewhat excited about Marc Methot. I'm not one of them. He is a big body in his mid-to-late twenties. Would he be a good guy to have on any team sure, but he's a 5-6 d-man on most teams in the NHL, is that really the type of guy the Oilers should be trying to bring in to make a difference and improve their blue line. I don't think so.

JASON GARRISON
Garrison has good size at 6'2, 220 pounds and an absolute rocket of a shot from the blue line. He has had one really good season, scoring 16 goals this year, and he is going to cash in because of it. He may be one of the best available but giving a 4.5 - 5.5 million dollar deal to a guy who has had one good season it probably not a recipe for success. He is also a left handed shot, if he was a right handed shot my opinion may differ slightly.

MATT CARLE
I do like Matt Carle's game. Put up some pretty good numbers in Philly this year, picking up a little bit of the slack left in the wake of Chris Pronger being sidelined for the season. Had 38 points this season and has hit 40 twice in his career. After seeing the number that Dennis Wideman got I think it's 100 percent safe to say that Carle will come in at more than 5.25 million per season. There was a lot of speculation that he would stay in Philly and I believe Jason Gregor has said he believes he at least stays out the east coast so that would take Edmonton out of the running. Unless of course they come over the top with a mammoth offer.
